For those of us you with $4,000 to $6,000 burning a hole in your pocket, the Dude’s original Pendleton Woolen Mills cardigan is going up for auction this weekend in Beverly Hills.

The Wizards unveiled their new look today, hearkening back to the red, white, and blue theme of the Bullets era. To say I’m a fan of the change would be a serious understatement, so I’ll add this: these uniforms are beautiful. As cliche as it sounds these days, the design team managed to take a classic uniform design and make it a contemporary kit that, as a completely biased observer, makes the Wizards one of the best-looking teams in the league. It’s clean, it’s patriotic, and it won’t do anything to help our league-worst 3-38 road record. But that’s ok because it’s clean and patriotic.

Also, Gheorghe Muresan is still hilariously tall.

Absolutely a fantastic read if you want to know the history behind J.Press from the mouth of the man who used to be its president. So many interesting nuggets of information are stored away in this four-part interview, like this bit, when discussing the origins of the J.Press jacket “hook vent”:

IS: And the hook vent?

RP: Up until World War II J. Press was primarily a custom tailor shop. But after the war Irving and Paul decided to manufacture readymade suits, but knew they had to differentiate themselves from competitors.

They noticed that with single-vented jackets, particularly if a guy had a big ass, the vent would separate and it was very unsightly looking. So they developed the hook vent in collaboration with our designer at the time, a survivor from Auschwitz named Felix Samelson who survived by being a tailor to SS officers, so he didn’t make any mistakes.

Press also talks about their competition with Brooks Brothers, moving away from a campus-only shop to an urban retailer and what he thinks of the new Japanese ownership.

I read about it before I saw the list, and I was scared. It would be a bummer for me if the national thrift chains figured out which of their clothing was high-quality and charged accordingly.

Believe it or not, there’s been a lot of research regarding flip-flops. A recent study found that flip-flop wearers tend to grip the footwear with their toes, causing shorter stride length and improper force when their feet hit the ground. What does this mean? Basically, a powerful force is transferred up our legs, putting additional stress on our lower body.

Unfortunately, our bodies aren’t designed for that type of stress. The spongy nature and lack of arch support found in many flip-flops causes the feet to roll inward toward each other causing pain and injury to the arch as well as plantar fasciitis. And if you’re not flat foot, you actually could become flat foot by wearing poorly made flip flops.

That’s Dr. John Whyte discussing the potential perils of sandaldom* in a recent Huffington Post Health article. Granted, doctors are always warning us about possible health hazards in seemingly innocuous everyday products, but this guy works for the Discover Channel so let’s take his word for it and add this to the list of reasons why you should refrain from donning sandals unless you’re in, near, or en route to a body of water.

* Someday a menswear blogger will start a band and I feel strongly that The Potential Perils of Sandoldom should make the list of possible band names, or at least potential debut album titles.

While nothing beats a real Brannock device, if you’re in a pinch there are such things as “printable Brannock devices” online (that one is from Famous Footwear). I’ve used that particular version in the past and consider it perfectly accurate, although it is not very helpful in measuring shoe widths (which is half of the point). If you know your width, however, it’s a convenient way to confirm your shoe size before ordering online.

Obscure Blog Trivia: Paul Lucas, the author of the Uni Watch Blog (tagline: The Obsessive Study Of Athletic Aesthetics), has a Brannock device tattooed on his arm.

You think you know your shoe size, but I think you don’t.

Every shoe is different. Not just brand to brand, but model to model, the relationship between the size of the shoe and the number printed inside is variable. This is doubly true for shoes lasted in one set of sizes (Euro, or UK for example) and sold in another.

But that’s no excuse.

Most men picked a shoe size when they were about 16, and have stuck with it ever since. They mostly picked that shoe size based on a hyper-cushioned pair of sneakers, built to accomodate feet of nearly every length and width. That number in your head might or might not actually have anything to do with the size of your foot.

This is the part where I make an admission. I’ve been buying size 12 shoes since I was a teenager. In fact, in some athletic shoes, I need a 13. No amount of heel slipping was going to convert me to anything different from trusty old 12D.

A few years ago, I started to realize that maybe I had narrow feet. Then one day I happened to try on a 12C. “Hmm,” I thought. “Feels pretty good.”

Then one day I bought some loafers at the thrift store. I tried them on before I looked at their size. They fit great. 11 1/2 B.

So today, I put my foot in the Brannock Foot Measuring Device. It’s true. I’m not a 12D. I’m an 11 1/2 B. Maybe a 12 B. My shoe buying (especially online) will never be the same.

So get yourself to a real shoe store, and put your foot in the Brannock. Who knows what you might learn.
